Barbecue Beer Can Chicken

A whole chicken is seasoned with a BBQ rub, then cooked on a can of beer on the grill for juicy and flavorful results.

- 1 whole chicken (approximately 4 pounds)

- 1 can of beer (any brand or flavor)

- Olive oil

- Salt

- Black pepper

- Garlic powder

- Onion powder

- Paprika

- Barbecue sauce (optional)

1. Preheat your grill to medium heat. If using a gas grill, only light one side of the grill to create an indirect cooking zone.

2. Prepare the chicken by removing the giblets and excess fat from the cavity. Rinse the chicken with cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

3. In a small bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, and 1 teaspoon of paprika.

4. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil over the chicken and rub it all over to evenly coat the chicken. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the chicken, making sure to cover all sides.

5. Open the can of beer and pour out half of it (or drink it!). Place the can on a flat surface and carefully lower the chicken onto the can, making sure it is sitting upright with the legs as a tripod.

6. Carefully transfer the chicken to the grill, placing it on the side with no direct heat. Close the lid and let it cook for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

7. After 1 hour and 15 minutes, check the internal temperature of the chicken using a meat thermometer. It should read at least 165°F when inserted into the thickest part of the thigh.

8. Once the chicken is fully cooked, carefully remove it from the grill and let it rest for 10 minutes before carving. The beer can may still be hot, so use tongs or oven mitts to remove it from the chicken.

9. Optional step: For a flavorful glaze, brush barbecue sauce over the chicken during the last 10 minutes of cooking.

10. Carve the chicken and serve hot with your favorite side dishes. Enjoy your delicious barbecue beer can chicken!
