Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce (Gai Lan)

This is a recipe for the Chinese Broccoli dish that is one of the most popular vegetable dishes at Yum Cha (Dim Sum). Steamed Chinese Broccoli (called Gai Lan) drizzled with a fabulous garlic ginger Oyster Sauce. Despite what you may read in other recipes, it’s not just plain Oyster Sauce – you need other flavourings!

Ingredients:

- 1 bunch Chinese broccoli (gai lan)

- 2 tablespoons olive oil

- Salt and pepper, to taste

- 2 cloves garlic, minced

- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce

- 1/4 teaspoon dried chili flakes (optional)

Direction:

1. Begin by preparing the Chinese broccoli. Rinse the bunch thoroughly under cold water and pat dry with a paper towel.

2. Cut off the tough ends of the stems and discard. Cut the remaining stems into 2-inch pieces.

3. In a small bowl, mix together the oyster sauce, minced garlic, and dried chili flakes (if using). Set aside.

4. In a large skillet or wok, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat.

5. Once the oil is hot, add the Chinese broccoli to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

6. Stir-fry the Chinese broccoli for 2-3 minutes, or until it begins to wilt and turn bright green.

7. Pour the oyster sauce mixture over the Chinese broccoli and continue to stir-fry for an additional 2-3 minutes, until the broccoli is tender and coated in the sauce.

8. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

9. Remove the Chinese broccoli from the heat and transfer to a serving dish.

10. Serve hot as a side dish or over rice as a main dish. Enjoy your delicious and simple Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce!
