Smoked mackerel on toasted crumpets

Try our easy starter – the filling can be made well in advance and chilled. Once your guests arrive, toast the crumpets and pile the filling on top


- 1 smoked mackerel fillet

- 4 crumpets

- Olive oil

- Salt

- Pepper

- Dried herbs (such as thyme or oregano)

- Lemon wedges (optional, for serving)


1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. Place the crumpets on a baking sheet and lightly brush them with olive oil on both sides.

3. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and your choice of dried herbs on the crumpets.

4. Place the crumpets in the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, until they are lightly toasted.

5. While the crumpets are toasting, prepare the smoked mackerel. Remove the skin from the fillet and flake the fish into small pieces.

6. Once the crumpets are toasted, take them out of the oven and top each one with the flaked smoked mackerel.

7. Place the baking sheet back in the oven and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes, until the mackerel is warmed through.

8. Once done, remove from the oven and serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side, if desired.
